Vice Chairman and CEO of Iberostar Group, Sabina Fluxá, stated, “Thanks to our commitment to becoming carbon neutral by 2030 and our determination to use renewable energy, become energy efficient and use efficient electricity, Iberostar Group has positioned itself as a leader in energy transition in the tourism industry. Our goal is to curb climate change and continue to create a strong base for responsible tourism”.
Our commitment to being free of fossil fuels will not waver and the company’s road map stipulates that fossil fuels will be replaced entirely by renewable energy.
For the company, clean energy is the only alternative for a sustainable energy supply and our commitment has resulted in incentivising renewable energy use, supporting the technology development (such as green hydrogen in Spain) and inspiring the private sector to use more renewable energy.
We have been working towards this goal since 2020, following the plan drawn up in our 2030 Agenda to fight climate change with one clear goal: make strides towards decarbonisation throughout the company and becoming emission-free.
To achieve this goal, we will end 2022 with one 100% electrified hotel, the Iberostar Waves Herceg Novi, in Montenegro, and with another one, the Iberostar Waves Cristina hotel, in Spain, in the process of becoming the second one. These two hotels will stop using fossil fuels. Thanks to electrification and guarantees of origin, we will stop emitting 360 tonnes of CO2 equivalent (CO2eq) per year (based on 2019 data).
