Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead)

The Day of the Dead tradition dates back to the pre-Columbian era. Mexicans believe that on this two-day celebration, the souls of their departed family and friends come back to earth to celebrate. During this day, the living welcome the souls of the dead with all kinds of offerings: food, candles, flowers or sweets.

You’ve got to visit Mexico during the Día de los Muertos! You’ll see people dancing on the streets dressed in brightly colored apparel and face paint. They will also offer sacrifices while sharing a special bread. Others will even go to the cemeteries to share a meal with the dead. Think of it as the Mexican Halloween party. This is one of the most famous Mexican traditions in the rest of the world. 

 

Mexican Hat Dance or Jarabe Tapatio

You must have watched a movie where Mexicans dance in colorful hats. The women wear long dresses decorated in all colors imaginable. The men wear unique pants and hats. The dance, called Jarabe Tapatío,  is lively and involves bands playing string instruments. As you walk through the streets of Mexico, you’ll see many bands playing Mexican hat dances. 

As well as the traditions mentioned above here are two more special traditional days you cannot miss. The first on the calendar is Independence Day, September 16, when the Grito (the scream) is recreated in all the country's towns and cities with the fireworks finale.

Typical Food of Mexico

Mexican gastronomy deserves you to spend a whole vacation on it by itself. No wonder it was erected as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Unesco in 2010. Mexican gastronomy is also a family tradition and a social event with long gatherings around the table. Tacos, spicy food, and tequila are the elements of Mexican gastronomy that have crossed the most borders. However, the typical food of Mexico is as varied as its territory is vast. Mexican cuisine is quite unique and is often composed of three main meals. During breakfast, people will take coffee with some sweet rolls. Then, there are various main meals to enjoy during lunch, typically between 1-3 PM, and dinner, which is often eaten past 9 PM.
