Iberostar Grand Packard hosted the fashion show featuring 11 outfits inspired by Havana created by Cuban designer Óscar de la Portilla
On the occasion of Havana’s fifth centenary and included in the commemorative events backed by Iberostar Hotels & Resorts, Cuban artist and fashion designer Óscar de la Portilla has created a collection called ‘Havana: 500 years of style’, featuring 11 outfits inspired by Havana’s most iconic buildings. The collection was presented during a fashion show that paid tribute to the Cuban capital. The setting for the event was the Iberostar Grand Packard hotel, situated in the heart of the city and the source of inspiration for one of the designs.
The 11 outfits were created from a range of fabrics featuring stunning prints and colours that transmit the essence of a city which is rich in character and a melting pot for contrasting architectural styles that blend together to perfection. Two of the collection outfits evoke Havana’s classic stained glass windows and columns, whilst the remaining nine mirror designer Óscar de la Portilla’s personal vision of a number of iconic buildings and their respective styles.
One of the collection highlights is the outfit inspired by the Iberostar Grand Packard hotel, which combines a love for tradition and a passion for modernity, perfectly reflecting Havana’s unique spirit. The collection also includes garments inspired by architectural treasures such as Havana’s ‘Alicia Alonso’ Grand Theatre, a venue that hosts the island’s most important cultural events; The Ursulines’ Palace or the Church of Reina, one of the country’s tallest temples built in a Gothic style that makes it instantly recognisable.
Óscar de la Portilla is a Cuban artist and fashion designer whose collections have been showcased at fashion weeks in France, Spain, the USA, Central America and the Caribbean. He has received numerous accolades, including the Grand Prize at the 2007 edition of Cuba’s International Craft Fair, FIART, as well as awards at later editions of FIART in 2008, 2012 and 2013, and the 2014 MANOS award from the Cuban Association of Artisan Artists (ACAA).
The fashion show was one of the events held in Havana to commemorate the city’s fifth centenary. The Iberostar Hotels & Resorts hotel chain has played a major role in this and a number of other activities, thereby contributing to the celebrations and transmitting Havana’s rich essence and culture.
