Iberostar HOTELS & RESORTS REPORTS TURNOVER INCREASE OF 6% IN 2013

Iberostar Hotels & Resorts has reported a turnover of 1,107 million euros in 2013, 6% more in comparison to the previous year
This turnover is a result of international expansion, diversifying source markets and a constant commitment to quality
After inaugurating the company's first hotel in the Mexican Pacific in 2013, the company will continue its international expansion over the coming years, with further projects in Brazil (Alagoas) and Colombia (Cartagena de Indias)

Iberostar Hotels & Resorts has finished the 2013 financial year with a turnover of 1,107 million euros - an increase of 6% in comparison to 2012 and turnover of more than 1,000 million euros for the second year running. The hotel chain has continued its progressive and constant growth shown, over the last few years, which has revealed a turnover increase of 36% in five years. This positive growth cements Iberostar as a key player in the international tourism sector.

The company’s turnover is a result of the hotel chains; consolidated international expansion, the diversification of source markets and its firm commitment to quality. This has placed the Majorcan based hotel chain as one of the leading companies in the holiday hotel industry.

Iberostar Hotels & Resorts' commitment to offering the best possible experience to guests has been recognised by its high repeat rate shown in 2013 (42%) and the 119 awards that the chain and individual hotels received last year (33 more than 2012). The 42 “Traveller’s Choice Awards” from TripAdvisor are a clear example of this, with the JOIA Paraíso by Iberostar in Mexico awarded Best All-Inclusive Resort in the World, with the JOIA Bávaro by Iberostar and JOIA Rose Hall by Iberostar Hotel also appearing in the top 10. The Iberostar Selection Anthelia in Tenerife was awarded Best All Inclusive Hotel in Spain and the 5th Best in Europe. For a company that is so dedicated to customer service, these awards are especially important, as they are based on the opinions of guests, who confirm that our chain is a world leader in this area.

The growth of Iberostar Hotels & Resorts throughout 2013 has been evident in Europe, the Middle East and Africa as well as America. Spanish destinations have shown themselves to be particularly strong over the last year, and are slightly ahead of other Mediterranean destinations. The Balearic Islands, Andalusia and the Canary Islands have had a strong financial year in terms of room occupation and RevPAR, which is slightly higher than the rest of the region, thanks to the British, Germans as well as the Russians, where we have seen a significant growth over the last few years.

On an international level, the USA and Canada have grown significantly as source markets, while European markets still show similar levels to 2012 (with an increase in Russian and French guests). Growth from Latin America stands out in particular, and this has been very important for hotels in Mexico, Brazil and the Caribbean.

Milestones in 2013

Throughout 2013 Iberostar Hotels & Resorts maintained a strategy of expansion in countries where the chain already has a presence, as well as finding new destinations. This combination has resulted in the recent opening of the new hotel Iberostar Selection Playa Mita, located on the beachfront at Punta Mita (Riviera Nayarit). The company invested 100 million euros in the design and construction of this new 5 star resort, which has 452 rooms. The hotel is the first Pacific Coast property owned by the company and it is a destination with a lot of potential. The new hotel joins the company’s collection of 9 properties in Mexico.

In Spain, the company added the Iberostar Son Antem to its portfolio in May, the first five-star Iberostar resort in Majorca. This establishment is the 14th hotel from the chain on the island, reinforcing its links to the region and its commitment to solid and continuous growth in one of its key destinations. The opening of this hotel also consolidates the chain's dedication to golf tourism, following the incorporation of Golf Novo Sancti Petri in Cadiz.

As well as the most reason additions, the company has also invested 33 million euros in 2013 in hotel refurbishment. On an international level, the Iberostar Cayo Coco underwent refurbishment, as did the Iberostar Origin Daiquiri and the Iberostar Taínos in Cuba, and the Iberostar Waves Costa Dorada in the Dominican Republic. In Spain the hotel Iberostar Selection Jardín del Sol Suites (Majorca) was completely refurbished, as well as all the rooms in the Iberostar Isla Canela (Huelva) and the Iberostar Bouganville (Tenerife).

The international expansion of the company has always been accompanied by a commitment to sustainable development in every establishment. This policy has become an essential part of Iberostar’s work method, and a fundamental pillar of the company's values and vision. An example of this is in the 80 international certificates (Green Globe, Green Key, ISO 14001, ISO 9001, EMAS and Martí) obtained by the hotel chain (23 more than in 2012). The exhaustive auditing process carried out at the different establishments has underlined the effort made by Iberostar Hotels & Resorts to practice responsible tourism.

Along similar lines to our commitment to the local area, the Executive President of the company, Miguel Fluxá, received the INTERNATIONAL HUMANITARIAN AWARD 2013 in November from the American Friends of Jamaica, in response to the work of the Iberostar FOUNDATION in Jamaica.

Projects for 2014

Iberostar Hotels & Resorts continues its constant search for business opportunities to continue its expansion and growth in two ways: new destinations to add to its portfolio and growth in destinations in which it already operates.

Along the same lines, in 2013 Iberostar Hotels & Resorts signed an agreement to start managing a hotel complex in Maceió, the capital of the state of Alagoas in the north east of Brazil. The hotel will be called IBEROSTRAR Magia Maceió and will be a 5-star establishment with 250 rooms. Its position in the state of Alagoas makes it a strategic location for the chain's focus on growth in the country. Construction work on the resort has already started, and it will continue throughout the year with the aim of opening in mid-2015. This will be the fourth establishment set up by the company in the country.

The company has started a new project in Cartagena de Indias. The hotel, which will have 400 rooms and will be a 5-star establishment, will be the first Iberostar hotel in Colombia and plans to be fully operational in 2016.

In addition to investing in new openings, the company invests a percentage of profits into refurbishment works and improving current hotels every year. Looking towards 2014, this investment should be around 36 million euros.

In 2014, Iberostar Hotels & Resorts will continue to offer high quality products and services to customers, based around the following key aspects: Fine dining, service and entertainment The company will continue to promote the IberostarCHEF concept, the Mencey Cookery Classroom and its workshops with Michelin star chefs. Lamoraga, a contemporary Spanish cuisine restaurant, will open an exclusive restaurant within the Iberostar Grand Budapest. Aimed at guests who value quality above everything else, this new establishment will open in March as part of the Moraga Premium category. The menu will include dishes created by 14 chefs with 22 Michelin stars between them.

Looking towards the coming year, the company has signed new agreements to collaborate with TopBonus from AirBerlin, with the aim of allowing guests to redeem miles from Topbonus and other associated oneworld companies in exchange for stays in Iberostar hotels.

The Majorcan chain will continue to develop different potential activities in 2014, studying possible opportunities for growth in European and Latin American capitals in a bid to expand into the urban hotel sector.
