Iberostar OPENS ITS SECOND HOTEL IN PORTUGAL WITH SINGLE USE PLASTIC-FREE ROOMS

The Iberostar Selection Lagos Algarve is a five star ocean resort hotel located in the south of the country, on the shores of the Atlantic.
This is the company’s second hotel in Portugal, following the 2017 opening of another five star property in the heart of Lisbon.
Highlights include its stunning architecture, interior design and prime location just a few steps away from Meia Praia, one of the Algarve’s finest beaches.

This month saw the opening of the Iberostar Selection Lagos Algarve, Iberostar Hotels & Resorts’ first ocean resort hotel on the Portuguese Algarve, a region blessed with 155 kilometres of Atlantic coastline. This is the Majorca-based group’s second hotel in Portugal, following the opening of a city hotel in the heart of Lisbon, which also holds five star status. In keeping with the company’s strategy as a leader in responsible tourism, all the rooms in both Portuguese hotels are officially single use plastic-free.

One of the most outstanding features of the Iberostar Selection Lagos Algarve is its prime location, just a few steps from Meia Praia which stretches out for an impressive four kilometres, making it one of the finest beaches on the Algarve. A wooden walkway provides quick and direct access to the beach. The area was voted Europe’s leading golf destination at the latest edition of the World Travel Awards, and fans of this sport will find a wide choice of 18 hole courses within a short distance of the new Iberostar hotel.

The completely open area surrounding the hotel forms a perfect backdrop. What’s more, its architecture and interior design – conceived to further enhance the sense of calm and wellness that are the hallmarks of this area – highlight the absolute tranquillity of this location. Southern Portugal’s unique light is set off to perfection inside the hotel, thanks to the large picture windows overlooking the Atlantic Ocean and the beach. Soft colours and large rugs also add to the overall atmosphere of serenity and relaxation. The Iberostar Selection Lagos Algarve comprises three buildings standing around a large swimming pool, creating a space that is reminiscent of an ocean viewpoint. The 220 spacious rooms offer complete comfort and include thoughtful touches such as the position of the bath tub which enables guests to bathe in light as well as water.

The hotel’s five star status is a guarantee of outstanding service. Discovering all the delights of Portugal’s cuisine is another feature that sets the Iberostar Selection Lagos Algarve apart from the rest, thanks to its two restaurants offering the superb standard of gastronomy for which Iberostar is renowned. The menus include dishes to suit all tastes, and are ideal for those guests that choose the All Inclusive option, a magnificent opportunity to experience Portugal’s magnificent food, drinks and beaches.

Iberostar adopts an integral approach to the wellness of its guests who, in addition to the chance to explore a new destination, will also be able to embark on a journey of self-discovery in contact with their surroundings and nature. The Iberostar wellbeing programme is ideal for experiencing all this through healthy eating options, physical activity both inside and outside the hotel, as well as the Spa Circuit, a haven offering a range of fabulous beauty treatments and massages.

Families will also be able to make the most of their leisure time with the Star Camp entertainment programme. Designed especially with our youngest guests in mind, it has its own special space and is based on sound values and educational principles. The activities are all rooted in the Multiple Intelligences theory and include one day dedicated entirely to the oceans.  The facilities at the Iberostar Selection Lagos Algarve also make it the ideal venue for all types of events, with a meeting room of more than 230 square metres featuring natural light and access to the hotel exterior.

In addition to its prime location, the town of Lagos has a special cultural and gastronomic appeal, making it a lively spot throughout the day and evening. The Algarve region is perfect for discovering Portugal’s wealth of traditions and relaxing in the sunshine, lulled by the sounds of the ocean, as well as for savouring its delicious gastronomy. Five star seafront hotels such as the Iberostar Selection Lagos Algarve enable guests to enjoy innovative leisure and culinary experiences and impeccable exclusive services for a holiday guaranteed to inspire and delight.

The ‘Wave of Change’ in Portugal

With more than 120 four and five star hotels in the world’s leading tourist destinations, the Iberostar Group is firmly committed to defining a responsible tourism model and promoting a change of mindset based on its Wave of Change movement.  In this sense, its objectives for 2019 include the elimination of single use plastics from all the Group’s hotel rooms. The opening of its second hotel in Portugal was the perfect opportunity to replace the single use plastic items in the rooms at the Iberostar Selection Lagos Algarve and Iberostar Selection Lisboa with alternatives made from natural or biodegradable materials, as well as the installation of post-consumer dispensers containing top quality BIO cosmetics, thereby cutting out tons of plastic waste each year.

The ‘Wave of Change’ was launched in 2017 as an Iberostar Group initiative in line with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 14, ‘Life Below Water’. Iberostar has come up with three major action lines in keeping with this SDG: the elimination of single use plastics from all its hotel rooms, and eventually all other areas; the promotion of sustainable fish consumption and risk assessment, responsibility and sustainability in procurement; and improved coastal health.

At the same time, Iberostar is consolidating its commitment to the environment with projects that contribute to the circular economy, the fight against climate change and power-based improvements aimed at cutting our emissions, boosting the use of renewable energies and optimising water management, thereby cutting consumption and guaranteeing reuse. A second major action within Iberostar’s sustainability plan is based on SDG 8, ‘Decent Work and Economic Growth’. The company has introduced numerous actions targeting people, including projects related to education and training for both its employees and the communities it works in; it is also collaborating with local suppliers to contribute to regional economic development.
